About the Chrome Dino game

The T-Rex runner is the game Chrome shows when there is no connection. Sebastien Gabriel drew it in 2014, deliberately in the flat pixel style of the 1990s, as a joke about being stranded in a prehistoric era without internet. It has been played billions of times, mostly by people waiting for wifi to come back.

You do not need to go offline to play it. This version runs in the page above, with the same endless desert, the same cacti and the same night mode that arrives once you are far enough in.

How to play

1. The dinosaur runs by itself. Your only job is to clear what is in front of it.
2. Jump over cacti. Duck under the pterodactyls that appear once you are past roughly 450 points.
3. The game gets steadily faster. There is no end — it runs until you hit something.
4. Around 700 points the colours invert into night mode, and they switch back and forth from then on.

Controls

Space bar / Up arrow

Jump.

Down arrow

Duck, and also drop faster out of a jump.

Touch

Tap to jump, hold the lower half of the screen to duck.

Tips

• Tap to jump, do not hold. A held jump goes higher and keeps you in the air over the next obstacle.
• Press down while airborne to land early. It is the only way to recover from a jump you started too soon.
• Pterodactyls fly at three heights. The high ones can be run under without ducking — save the duck for the low ones.
• Watch the gap, not the cactus. Groups of three need an earlier take-off than a single one.
• At high speed, stop reacting to what you see and start reacting to spacing. Past about 900 the obstacle is already too close by the time you have identified it.
